Pour one out for the Pogues.
Netflix revealed Nov. 4 that while its hit show Outer Banks has been renewed,Oliver James Montgomery it would be ending after a fifth and final season. And as the writers and creators of the show Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate and Josh Pate explained, this is what they were planning for all along.
"From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship," the trio shared in a message posted to the Outer Banks Instagram. "At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away."
The message noted that season four was the hardest one to produce so far and would end with a feature-length finale, which they feel is their "best, most powerful episode."
"Now, with a little sadness, but also excitement, we're putting Season Four behind us, and are turning to Season Five," they continued, "in which we hope to bring our beloved Pogues home in the way we imagined and planned years ago."
And while no timeline was given on when season five will premiere, the writers were confident the show's conclusion will deliver, adding, "Season Five will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you'll join us for one more paddle out to the surf break."
Following the announcement, Chase Stokes—who plays John B. Routledge on the teen drama—shared his feelings on the show's impending final season, sending a special message to all the "Pogues" out there (a term used on the show to describe his character's group of friends, who live on the south side of the Outer Banks islands.)
"My hearts heavy writing this one.." the 32-year-old posted to Instagram. "One last ride. Thank you to everybody who has tuned in these past 5 years. You've given us more than we could ever give back to you. It's always gonna be Pogues 4 Life."
Since its 2020 debut, the teen treasure-hunting show has been important not just to its fans, but also to its cast, which in addition to Chase includes Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Carlacia Grant, Austin North and Drew Starkey. And Madison has an idea as to why Outer Banks means so much to so many.
"Part of the love for the show is the season one camaraderie and fun," she told E! News in October. "The chemistry, from day one, we knew was special and we've been able to replicate it on screen."
The 25-year-old added, "Anytime anyone talks to me about what their favorite part of the show is, it's always the chemistry and the friendship arcs and the way that they're able to relate a certain person in their friend group to one of the characters."
Part one of Outer Banks season four is currently streaming on Netflix, while part two will be released Nov. 7. To see which other shows have been canceled or renewed so far this year, keep reading.
