Along with the summer season comes a major influx of vacations and most of all, tourists in your city. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I think many of us have fallen into the typical "touristy" category of fashion, by accident or not, at least once to a few times in our lives. And if you're anything like me, you're probably slightly embarrassed and sick of sticking out like a sore thumb. While I do believe in not conforming to societal norms and always finding your own style/fashion that best shows off who you are, I'm also a lover of a good old capsule wardrobe you can style to fit in anywhere. So, that being said, as a former fashion editor now turned shopping editor, I'm here to give you a few tips as to how to dress less cringey, and more chic while on vacation.
First things first, it's best to start with what makes you not fit in. Depending on where you're choosing to go on vacation this year (like Italy, France, the UK, and Mexico to name a few) the reality of visiting a city full of culture and trends that are built upon layers of history means that the way you carry yourself and style certain staple pieces can mean more than what you're actually wearing. Your attitude plays a major part too, along with your confidence and sometimes even the way you walk. Basically, worrying about not fitting in might be the biggest tell that you're not from there (apart from the chunky belt bag you're carrying around).
That said, we're here to talk about what you can/should wear while on vacation. So here are some styling hacks I recommend keeping in mind while traveling. Staples like a denim skirt, classy sandals, or simple linen dress are great starter pieces that aren't too flashy. But suppose you're feeling daring and want more cute prints reminiscent of the local fashion. In that case, we recommend fashion rental subscriptions (like our favorite Nuuly) that allow you to rent out pieces for your vacation that you wouldn't normally wear back home.

Staples to take on vacation
Take this linen vest on vacation with you and pair it with matching flowy shorts for a classic look that'll never fail you.
Button-up shirts are some of the most versatile pieces you'll ever have in your closet. They can be tucked inside any bottom or layered over a cute tank. I'm especially loving this striped poplin one from Nordstrom right now, since it can be worn as a set or over a pair of baggy jeans for a more laidback look.
With summer in full effect, linen dresses are the way to go to keep cool and look effortlessly chic. Opt for this stunning linen button-front v-neck maxi dress that features a fit and flare silhouette, and a cute front slit for a flattering and feminine look.
You can't go traveling without a comfy slide, and these Mila ones from The Drop are exactly the style you need. They come in three neutral colors and pair perfectly with any vacation fit.
Denim skirts are super versatile and go with any top, making them timeless pieces that help you fit in wherever you go.
Editor picks from Nuuly
We always recommend packing a flowy sundress for your vacation. This tiered midi dress, with its cute side cutouts and classic striped design, has a stylish vibe that's perfect for a summer in Italy.
Going for a more tropical vibe? These floral print shorts are everything you need for a trip to Hawaii. Pair it with a cute bodysuit for a comfy yet stylish look.
For an eye-catching, opulent look, choose this puff-sleeve spotted mini dress that effortlessly complements the stunning fashion scene of Monte Carlo.
Bandeau tops for the summer are back and better than ever. That's why we're pairing this gorgeous faux-collar top with baggy jeans for our next trip to New York City.
Just imagine yourself drinking limoncello and eating pasta in this beautiful smocked off-the-shoulder dress that gives off just the right amount of Italian vibes. It's the perfect outfit for strolling through the streets of Venice and keeping you comfy yet not overly cliché.
